Renovating your bathroom, kitchen or living area? Under-tile heating mats are one of the most cost-effective ways to add luxury warmth to any tiled floor. During your renovation, the mat simply rolls out onto the existing surface before your tiles go down. A thermostat then keeps the floor at your preferred temperature; heating only when you need it.
How to install
Under-tile mats require no ducts, vents or wall-mounted consoles; just a power connection and a thermostat. Because everything is hidden beneath the floor, your walls and living space stay completely uncluttered. Calculate heating area
Measure the floor area you want to heat, then deduct any permanent fixtures like built-in wardrobes, kitchen benches or bathroom vanities; you only need to heat the open floor space. The worked examples below will help you choose the right mat size.

Most floor coverings are suitable for use with underfloor heating; see the list below for compatible options.
Engineered wood flooring must only be installed on a fully dry subfloor. This typically means allowing the underfloor heating system to operate initially to help remove residual moisture from the concrete slab before installation.
Floor covering adhesives — Some water-based latex adhesives may soften or lose bond strength at temperatures above 40°C. For this reason, we recommend setting the underfloor heating thermostat to a maximum floor temperature of 25°C.

Heat rises evenly from the entire floor surface, creating a consistent temperature from floor to ceiling — no cold spots, no hot blasts.
CSIRO research found that when floor-level temperatures reach around 16°C, people feel warm throughout their whole body. By contrast, people can still feel cold at floor level even when the air at head height exceeds 21°C.

Can sections of the heated floor be isolated?
Yes. Multiple zoning with independent thermostats for difference rooms/areas is recommended. This gives greater control of comfort levels (temperatures) and more economical running costs.
Can the system be installed on an existing concrete floor?
Yes — under-tile heating mats can be installed directly on an existing concrete floor. The mat is laid flat on the concrete surface and embedded in a minimum 30mm cement screed before your new floor covering goes down. No demolition of the existing slab is required. The system can then be connected to off-peak electricity for the most economical running costs.
Can the system be installed on a timber floor?
Yes.
Heating mats are laid out on the timber floor and glued. A 40mm cement screed is laid over the floor. It then may be connected to off-peak electricity.
What happens if something isn’t working – Can it be repaired?
If a heating element is ever damaged, it can be located and repaired without replacing the whole system. We use specialist equipment to pinpoint the exact fault location, then expose and fix just that section of cable.
Are there any additional hidden costs?
Costs not covered are:
Wiring from the thermostat and heating unit to the switch board and connection to the off-peak supply. This work is usually done by the onsite electrician when all other lights and power points are wired.
What is the guarantee?
All AHHM heating mats carry a 25-year warranty from the date of purchase. Thermostats are covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
What maintenance is required?
Over the lifespan of the heating mats, minimal maintenance is required as there are no moving parts that wear and tear, apart from the thermostat which is a simple and easy replacement.
Do you need to alter home/building design or make concrete slab thicker to accommodate heating cables?
No. The heating mats are laid and glued directly on top the existing floor. Also, there is no need to allow space for ducting or furnace.
What is the minimum heated area in a existing floor?
There is no minimum room size for under-tile floor heating. However, for standard 240-volt operation the heated floor area must be at least 1.0m². This means even a small bathroom or ensuite can be heated effectively — making under-tile mats a popular choice for compact renovation projects.
What happens when a cold night is followed by a warm day?
The heat will stay trapped in the floor when the air temperature exceeds the floor temperature so no heat will rise out of the floor.
How hot does the floor get?
To maintain a comfortable room temperature of 21°C, the floor surface typically reaches around 25°C — just 4°C above the desired air temperature. This is warm and pleasant underfoot without being uncomfortably hot. The thermostat regulates this automatically so the floor never exceeds your set temperature.
