Electricity cost calculator
Work out roughly what floor heating costs to run, with three sums and the rate off your own electricity bill.
Work it out in three steps
You need two numbers from your own job and one from your bill. A phone calculator does the rest.
Find the load
Multiply the heated area by the output of the system. Under tile heating mats are 200 watts per square metre.
6 m2 × 200 W = 1,200 W, which is 1.2 kWUsing 6 m² as an example. Put your own heated area in.The heated area is smaller than the room. The vanity, the bath, the shower screen line and anything else fixed to the floor all come out of it.
Turn the load into energy
Multiply by the hours the heating runs in a day.
1.2 kW × 4 hours = 4.8 kWh a dayUsing 4 hours as an example. Put in the hours you expect to run it.Apply your own rate
Multiply by the rate on your electricity bill, in cents per kilowatt hour.
4.8 kWh × your rate = the cost for that dayWe do not print a rate here. Retailers, tariffs and states all differ, and the number on your own bill beats any average we could publish.
Read it as a ceiling, not a bill
The thermostat switches the heating off once the floor is up to temperature and back on when it drops, so the system does not draw full power the whole time it is on. The figure above is the most it can cost in a day, not what it will cost.
