Electric underfloor heating in Ryde
We install electric underfloor heating across Ryde, where about 1,401 new homes a year are approved. The heating here is usually decided with the slab rather than added years afterwards. The valley suburbs are the coldest streets we quote on this side of the harbour, and a tiled floor holds that overnight temperature. The two ends of the work are in slab heating cable before a pour and under tile heating mats in a West Ryde walk up.
The benefits of electric underfloor heating in Ryde
Flats are 44.6% of homes here, separate houses 40.8% and townhouses and semis 14.2%. Most of the reasons below come from how much of this area is being built rather than renovated. The rest come from the ground underneath and from which of our three systems a floor can take.
Heating decided with the slab, not years later
About 1,401 new dwellings a year are approved here, and renovation is worth about a twentieth of new building. In slab heating cable is laid over the mesh and the concrete covers it, taking nothing from the ceiling height. The benefit is a heated ground floor that takes nothing from the ceiling and needs no step at a doorway. It has to be decided before the concrete is booked, because after the pour that option has gone.
A tower bathroom sits over somebody else's ceiling
6,380 homes here sit in blocks of nine storeys or more, and Macquarie Park and Meadowbank are 92% flats. Under tile heating mats go into the tile bed above the waterproof membrane, with nothing drilled into the slab. In a tower the bathroom usually sits over another home, so that membrane is what everyone watches. The benefit is a warm tiled floor in a Macquarie Park bathroom that leaves the membrane and the party wall alone.
Valley streets here wake up genuinely cold
A Bureau of Meteorology station inside this area at Macquarie Park records a July mean minimum of 5.0°C. It also gives 14 nights a year at or below 2°C, and it is a valley site rather than a river one. Under tile heating mats warm a tiled Marsfield bathroom through more quickly than either of our other two systems. The benefit is that our thermostats run on a timer, so the floor heating is warm before anyone is up.
Run the floor heating before the evening peak
8,951 households here have a controlled load circuit, and charges on this network are highest between 3pm and 9pm. The benefit is that our thermostats can be set to bring the floor heating up before that window opens. A floor sensor then holds the temperature instead of chasing it, on a controlled load or off peak circuit. In a newer Macquarie Park tower on an embedded network there is no controlled load, and the timer does everything.
A heated bathroom floor the street never sees
Not one of the 194 heritage items in this area names an interior, and no Council page says otherwise. Under tile heating mats sit inside the tile bed of a bathroom, which is work the street never sees. Conservation areas cover about 1.9% of the residential land here, and a minor works exemption has no prescribed fee. The benefit is that an Eastwood bathroom retile with floor heating in it raises no interior heritage question.
No flue, no riser and no ceiling space
A motion to require the electrification of new homes here was lost in February 2025, by three votes to ten. So gas is still a legal choice here, and gas or ducted heating needs a flue, a riser and ceiling space. A Meadowbank floor plate has least of all three, which is why apartment fit outs here ask about floor heating. The benefit of under tile heating mats is that the heating sits inside the tile bed and takes no room at all.
What we would install in Ryde
This area approves about 1,401 new homes a year, so more of our work starts at the drawing than at the tiles.
Cable in a slab
In slab heating cable is tied to the reinforcement before the pour, and it adds nothing to the floor height. With about 1,401 new dwellings approved here each year, the benefit is a warm ground floor settled at drawing stage.
Slab heating cables, dual coreA mat under the tiles
Flats are 44.6% of homes here, and most of those sit in lift buildings of four storeys or more. Under tile heating mats go into the tile bed of a bathroom that already exists, so nothing is fixed through the structure. The benefit is a warm tiled floor in a tower bathroom with no riser or ceiling space to find.
Under tile heating matsCable in a screed
Denistone, Putney and East Ryde are the house belt here, where a rear addition takes a topping screed. In screed heating cable goes into that topping, and the extra mass holds the heat longer than a tile bed does. The benefit is a heated addition floor that stays warm into the evening on a Putney winter night.
In screed heating cableWhy Ryde properties choose us
We install across Ryde and the rest of the Ryde area, and we size every job from your floor plans before we quote. Installation is always subject to checking installer availability, which we do before we agree a day.
How we install underfloor heating in Ryde
Plans first, then a quote
Send us the plans for your new home, renovation, office or hotel. We measure the heated areas from them, calculate the cable size and quote the materials. If you want us to install, a second quote covers the installation labour. Nothing is ordered and no day is booked until you accept.
Installation day
Once you accept and tell us the job site is ready, we agree a day, subject to checking installer availability. The floor has to be prepared and ready before that day: your own trades handle levelling, waterproofing and anything else above the slab. Our installer lays the cable or the mat, fits the thermostat, and tests the system with our own equipment before leaving site. Your tiler covers it with the screed or the tile bed.
In a strata building the path is different again
In a New South Wales strata scheme the lot boundary generally sits at the upper surface of the floor. The slab underneath belongs to the building rather than to you. We lay the mat into the tile bed instead of touching that slab, and nothing is drilled or chased into it. Installing hard flooring, and the wiring and power points that come with it, is a minor renovation under the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015. Waterproofing is carved out of that definition, so a full bathroom rebuild goes to a special resolution rather than an ordinary one. Your builder or project manager deals with the owners corporation, and we build to whatever that approval allows.
Read the consent, because it differs from the plan
The plan sets construction at 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 8am to 4pm on Saturday. Some 2026 consents set narrower hours than that, so the consent on your own job is the one to work to. A damage bond of one per cent of the construction value is held on the job. There is no tradesperson parking permit at all, and one free visitor permit per property is what a van usually runs on. We read the consent dates and order your under tile heating mats or in slab heating cable to them.
Underfloor heating for Ryde homes
Flats passed houses between 2016 and 2021
Flats overtook houses here between 2016 and 2021, at 44.6% against 40.8%, with semis and townhouses at 14.2%. The flat count went from 11,344 in 2006 to 21,854 in 2021 while the house count stayed near 20,000 throughout. Only about half of today's flats existed in 2006, which makes this one of the youngest flat stocks we have written up. Ryde and Top Ryde gained 4,295 flats since 2011 and Macquarie Park 2,424. West Ryde is the exception, where 88% of its flats already stood in 2011, and those bathrooms take under tile heating mats.
The towers, the town centres and the house belt
Macquarie Park and Meadowbank are 92% flats and hold 15% of the area's homes. Macquarie Park has 58% of its homes in blocks of nine storeys or more and no separate houses at all. Ryde, West Ryde and the Ryde parts of Gladesville and Eastwood hold 54% of homes and most of both the houses and the flats. Denistone, Denistone East, Denistone West, East Ryde, Putney and Tennyson Point are the house belt at 85% houses. So we quote in screed heating cable for a whole house belt floor and under tile heating mats almost everywhere else.
The ground here is not always stable
Council says many properties in this area carry some degree of risk of slope failure, mapped in 1991 and declared on planning certificates. A later report flagged areas affected by extensive man made infill and a risk of subsidence. The plan caps excavation outside the building footprint at 900mm. It says a building on a longitudinally sloping site will generally need to step down it. A slope steeper than ten degrees needs a geotechnical assessment. In slab heating cable suits a stepped or suspended slab here, and we size the insulation beneath it to suit.
Winter mornings in Ryde
Macquarie Park stands inside this area and reads for the valley suburbs around it. The river stations are fairer for Putney, Meadowbank and Gladesville, and the two disagree by more than a degree.
- July nights
5.0°C at Macquarie Park inside this area, against 6.4°C at Riverview and 6.6°C at Sydney Olympic Park on the river. A tiled floor sits close to that overnight, and it is the first thing a bare foot meets in the morning.
- Frost
14 nights a year at or below 2°C in the Macquarie Park valley, against under one at the river stations. The overnight low is what decides how cold the floor is at seven in the morning.
- Climate zone
Zone 5 on all land here, from Macquarie Park down to Putney and Meadowbank. Insulation under the heating is what keeps the warmth in the room, and it is sized from that zone.

Frequently asked questions about Ryde
Do you cover every suburb in the Ryde area?
Yes. We install across the Ryde area and the surrounding localities, including every suburb listed on this page. We check installer availability before we agree a day, which is the one condition that travels with every job. If your suburb is not shown, contact us with the address and we will confirm coverage before we quote.
What are your service hours in Ryde?
Our hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5:30pm, and we are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Plans and photographs can be sent at any time through the quote form on this page. If you need us on site in Ryde, the day is agreed once we have checked installer availability. It is worth sending the plans as early as you can.
Which of the weather readings fits my own street?
The Macquarie Park one only if you are in the valley. The station sits inside this area and records a July mean minimum of 5.0°C with 14 nights a year at or below 2°C. The site is a valley one, so it reads fairly for Marsfield, Macquarie Park and the Denistones. For Putney, Meadowbank, Gladesville and East Ryde the river stations are nearer and gentler, at about 6.4°C and under one frosty night a year.
Is a new build the cheaper moment to put this in?
Yes, and more people here get that choice than anywhere else we cover. About 1,401 new dwellings a year are approved in this area. In a new slab the cable is tied to the reinforcing mesh before the pour. There is no tile bed to build up and no floor height to make back at a doorway. The catch is timing, because in slab heating cable has to be decided before the concrete is ordered.
Is a listed Eastwood house's interior protected?
No, and the position here is simpler than on the other side of the river. Not one of the 194 listed items in this area names an interior, and no Council page claims a listing covers one. A minor works exemption has no prescribed fee. Council asks for the technical details and material samples with the request. Lodge it early, because work cannot start until the written confirmation has been issued.
What does a slope notation mean for the floor?
It usually means a geotechnical assessment and a floor that steps. Council maps slope instability and declares it on planning certificates, and a slope steeper than ten degrees needs an assessment. The plan caps excavation outside the footprint at 900mm and expects a building on a sloping site to step down it. Cable goes into a stepped or suspended slab exactly as it does into a flat one. The benefit is a warm stepped floor, with the insulation beneath it sized for the air below.
Which network supplies the streets near Parramatta?
Ausgrid almost everywhere, but there is a narrow exception worth knowing. Endeavour's area overlaps about half a square kilometre along the Parramatta boundary, with substations in Marsden Road at West Ryde and Hillview Road at Eastwood. A few houses on those streets may be Endeavour customers rather than Ausgrid ones. The bill is what says which. It changes the hours a controlled load circuit has power, not whether a heated floor can be installed.
